When I first examined this photograph I think about the hot topic issue in the United States, Race. There is a major divide in America due to the high racial tensions between White and Black people. The issue is mainly sourced about the feeling of inequality between the races and social unjust towards African- Americans. However, this picture counters the stereotype of racial tension by depicting a friendship between the two "brothers" despite the racial issues presented in America.
Wing Young Huie and Margaret Atwood both show the concept of othering via presenting two social groups and enabling one to have a perceived hierarchy over the other group. However, they differ in their depiction and connotation toward the social issue. In The Handmaids Tale, Atwood provides a negative connotation toward the issue of social injustice by exaggeration the contrast between the two social groups at play and the effect this unjust can have on a social if it continues to render and grow. Atwood and Huie also relate by the strong use of quotes and first person POV. By using this it also the intended audience to build a relationship with the subjects of the text through being able to read and internalize the exact words of the subjects.

  1. In this blog post, Kenan chose to write about a photo by Wing Young Huie. This photo shows two men, of different race, spending time with one another out on a porch. Kenan related this article this article to present day events dealing with racism. I thought that this was a very good connection due to the fact that it is a very apparent problem around the United States. This picture by Wing Young Huie goes against the stereotypes of racism and depicts two people of the opposite race getting along. I really enjoy this photo because it shows a side of people that often isn't seen: goodness at heart. When dealing with racial topics, the media tends to focus on events that are negative, such as riots, fights, and even protests dealing with racism. What the media fails to show is the positives, people of different races coming together to share interests, passions and grow closer with one another. The pictures shows how good life can be and that stereotypes of racism are not always true. I also agree with Kenan's other statement about how Margaret Atwood and Wing Young Huie both show the relationships between race and social groups.

  2. I also immediately connected this picture to the problems that we face as Americans in our society today. I completely agree that it divides our country into two very distinct groups of people, like the picture is divided down the middle. Your description of the picture is very different that my initial reaction of racial stereotypes. You state that the picture is shown differently because there are two brothers of different skin colors, something not usually seen. I believe this is an interesting picture because of this.
I think that the picture definitely shows the hierarchy of different races but through something different than what you say. I believe that it is shown through their body position. However, I do agree with you when you say that Atwood emphasizes the social status of each different group (ex: handmaids, wives, etc.). This is shown differently however because the Handmaid's have the most prized possession (fertility), but are treated the harshest.
